Burkina Faso President Ibrahim Traoré has declared that Sharia law will not be implemented in the country under any circumstances, reaffirming his government’s commitment to religious freedom.
Speaking on the issue, Traoré questioned why about 800 Burkinabe students had chosen to study Sharia in Saudi Arabia instead of acquiring vocational skills or practical professions that could contribute to national development.
He also advised those studying Sharia abroad not to return with expectations of introducing Islamic law in Burkina Faso, stressing that the country will continue to uphold its existing legal system.
The president emphasized that every citizen remains free to practice their own religion, but maintained that Burkina Faso’s governance will not be based on Sharia law.
