US Urges Maximum Restraint as Cross-Border Tensions Rise Between Ethiopia and Eritrea

The United States expressed deep concern over deteriorating relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea, warning that mounting cross-border friction threatens to trigger a wider military crisis across the Horn of Africa.

In an official statement released by the U.S. Department of State, Washington strongly urged both neighboring nations to exercise restraint and resolve differences through peaceful diplomatic channels.

“Increasing cross-border tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea have the potential to affect the entire region,” the statement read.“The Horn of Africa cannot sustain another military conflict and humanitarian crisis.”

U.S. officials highlighted that renewed hostilities risk disrupting key international partnerships and destabilizing critical regional initiatives. “A conflict jeopardizes ongoing U.S. collaboration on shared interests with both countries,” the State Department warned.

Washington called on Addis Ababa and Asmara to honor neighborly borders and return to the formal commitments established in their historic diplomatic pact.

“We strongly urge Ethiopia and Eritrea to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of their neighbors, exercise maximum restraint and return to dialogue and cooperation as agreed in their 2018 peace framework,” the statement stressed. “Peace through dialogue is the only path toward sustainable security, economic growth, and prosperity.”

The diplomatic intervention comes amid lingering fragility following the 2018 historic agreement that ended two decades of stalemate between the two nations, as international observers closely monitor security along the shared frontier.
